After spending about a week working in pairs creating Word Root Presentations, students are now ready to work on their own. The Word Root Presentations are primarily a homework project. If you need to work at school, please arrange to stay after school to complete your project.

Below you will information you need to successfully complete your Word Root Presentations.

This project can take quite a bit of time, so do not put off working on this project! Make a plan today about how you are going to complete all the work that you need to finish.

Today I introduced our Word Study projects that students will be working on over the next few months. Each student has two different word roots (a prefix and/or a suffix). They will make a slideshow about each word root and present this slideshow to the class. Look for a more detailed post about this project soon.

Etymology: the study of words

“Etym” = true meaning; “ology” = study of, science of

Word Roots

Prefix: Comes before the root word. “Pre” means before.

Suffix: Comes at the end of the root word.

Prefixes and suffixes are small parts of words that come from Greek and Latin. Knowing prefixes and suffixes helps you understand the meanings of words.

Example 1:

“bio-” = life, “-ology” = science of or study of

Biology is the study of life.

Example 2:

“mis-” = bad

To misbehave is to act or behave poorly.

Friday a chef from the Farmers’ Market Association visited Pioneer and demonstrated how to use a few simple ingredients to make a delicious soup.

My wife and I always love shopping for fresh produce at farmer’s markets. The Union City Farmers’ Market can be found all year round, every Saturday from 9am to 1pm at Alvarado/Chesar Chavez Park.

Cookin’ the Market is a program of cooking demonstrations in PCFMA’s farmers’ markets and other community events that show just how quick and easy it is to cook with fresh, locally-grown ingredients.

Cookin’ the Market emphasizes fresh and seasonal ingredients, healthy recipes, and easy preparations to demonstrate that anyone, regardless of time or talent, can cook fresh and nutritious foods that not only taste better, but are also better for you.

Students have been assigned word roots (prefixes and suffixes) and are responsible for making a small slideshow to teach the class about their root word.

Here is a very impressive slideshow Octavia made “just for fun” and as a way to learn how to use the presentation application that is part of Google Apps.

Octavia does a great job of connecting the text on each slide to a picture that enhances the meaning of what she is trying to share. Judging by this slideshow, Octavia really understands the strength and power of presentations is visual (pictures)! Yeah!!
