Today I surprised the class with a newt. The students were so excited and full of questions about our new class pet. Our newt doesn’t have a name yet…but I’m sure I will be able to report a new name tomorrow. Here a few photos.
Here we are putting soil into the terrarium.
Here we are planting some ferns.
Here is our newt!

Will we have a pet or newt, too Mr .Calison?
Hi Irene! Thanks for the question. We may get a bunch of “pets” later in the year. These “living things” may not be what you would normally consider pets. Any ideas what I am talking about?
Mr. C.
Are the ”pets” like plants?
Nope, good guess! These “pets” are living things and they move.
Hmmm is it a…….bug?
No…good guess though! What else could the class pet(s) be?
hmmmmm is it…….. amphibions?
These “pets” live in the “dark”.
…..hmmmm.Then how about bats?Rodents?Hamsters?
Another clue, these “pets” are smaller in size than bats, rodents, and hamsters.
Mr.C what is a newt?
What does it eat?
Are newts chamelions?
How long does it live?
How many varieties of colors do they have?
These are great questions! Can you find out this answer and then you can share your findings with the class?
Where is the newt right now?
Unfortunately the newt died this summer. = (
If it is still alive, may I see it ?
Where did you get the newt?
When our school got new science books last year, each fourth grade teacher received a coupon for a free newt. A company sent us the newts in a big box through the mail.
are we gonna have a nocturnal pet?
I’m not sure if these “pets” are considered nocturnal or not? I’ll have to research this. It is hard to see these “pets” in the day or the night. That is a great question and a great vocabulary word!
Are we gonna have a chameleon, or at least any animal that changes color?
When are we gonna get our class pet(s)
Some things will happen over the next few months….
WOW A Class Pet Newt!
Can we have a pet day where everyone brings their pet to school? Can we introduce them to the class?
That is an interesting idea Tara. I will need to talk with Mrs. Stanley about this first.
What is a newt?
A newt is a carnivore.
It eats bugs, worms and newt food.
It comes in many varieties of colors exept their colors change if they are kept as a pets.
Great Tara! Where did you find this information?
I found this information on the internet, google.
I got this information on the internet
I found it by looking up newts and looking up about how they live.
Wow! =3 I wonder if we are going to get a pet coupon!
Are we going to
have a pet day?I want to show my pet hamster=3
I made I double because I forgot ”to” by the way.
If we are gonna have a pet day can we bring dogs? I’m asking `cause I know they are not allowed on campus.
When are we having a class pet?
