We Have a Class Newt!

Today I surprised the class with a newt. The students were so excited and full of questions about our new class pet. Our newt doesn’t have a name yet…but I’m sure I will be able to report a new name tomorrow. Here a few photos.

Here we are putting soil into the terrarium.

Hi Irene! Thanks for the question. We may get a bunch of “pets” later in the year. These “living things” may not be what you would normally consider pets. Any ideas what I am talking about?

Mr. C.

Are the ”pets” like plants?

Reply

Nope, good guess! These “pets” are living things and they move.

Where did you get the newt?

When our school got new science books last year, each fourth grade teacher received a coupon for a free newt. A company sent us the newts in a big box through the mail.

are we gonna have a nocturnal pet?

Reply

23 Matt October 3, 2009 at 12:38 pm

I’m not sure if these “pets” are considered nocturnal or not? I’ll have to research this. It is hard to see these “pets” in the day or the night. That is a great question and a great vocabulary word!

Are we gonna have a chameleon, or at least any animal that changes color?

Can we have a pet day where everyone brings their pet to school? Can we introduce them to the class?

That is an interesting idea Tara. I will need to talk with Mrs. Stanley about this first.

What is a newt?
A newt is a carnivore.
It eats bugs, worms and newt food.
It comes in many varieties of colors exept their colors change if they are kept as a pets.
